TEDxBrisbane is poised to embark on a new era of growth, with the former TEDxSouthBank branch of the global ideas sharing platform adopting the citywide identity to extend its reach across the greater Brisbane community under the direction of licensee Juanita Wheeler.
The re-named forum will bring together talented and innovative speakers to inform and inspire the community by spreading actionable ideas through a series of short, powerful talks.
Ms Wheeler said the name change was an important milestone for the TEDx community across Queensland.
"We are incredibly excited about changing names from TEDxSouthBank to TEDxBrisbane,” Ms Wheeler said.
“While the TEDx community has had amazing experiences with TEDxSouthBank, in many instances life-changing experiences, the opportunity to move to a citywide name more appropriately reflects our strong ties with the entire Brisbane community.
“It also reflects our mission to bring global ideas worth spreading to the Brisbane community, and to showcase Brisbane’s most innovative, remarkable and potentially world-changing ideas to the world," she said.
The rebranded platform continues to build on the key values of the TEDx movement, which saw a diverse range of creative and inspirational speakers engage their audience at South Bank throughout 2016, including former Young Australian of the Year Drisana Levitzke-Gray, urban designer Lara Nobel, and author J.M. Donellan.
"TEDx is a global community of passionate, engaged individuals, driven to challenging their preconceptions and embracing new ideas. They are the doers of the world. Beyond any single event, TEDxBrisbane, like TEDxSouthBank before it, will be a community of individuals committed to discovering, sharing and spreading ideas, and then taking action based on those ideas in order to make the world good," Ms Wheeler said.
In 2017, TEDxBrisbane presents a program of TEDTalks, combining video and live speakers to spark deep discussion and connection amongst participants at the event, as well as growing a strong global online audience.
“TEDxBrisbane has a rigorous curatorial process. Our experienced curatorial team seek out topics and ideas that are urgent and topical, game changing, or which we feel our community needs to hear, in this moment. We then seek out the most informed, compelling speaker on the topic to present their evidence-based, innovative idea to our community,” Ms Wheeler said.
TEDxSouthBank held its first event in 2012 as TEDxSouthBankWomen under founding licensee Laura Stokes, before changing its name to TEDxSouthBank in 2014 to reflect its broadened scope to the wider community.
Ms Wheeler took the reigns as licensee in 2016.
TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 110 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
TEDxBrisbane acknowledges and thanks previous licensee Carl Lindgren and Paul Fairweather of TEDxBrisbane and pioneers of the Australian TEDx movement.
